It's a trap! The anti-haul theory and how to avoid unnecessary spend sprees!
13:03:00
Since I am a self proclaimed skincare enthusiast, a makeup junkie, a body care addict... it's obvious that I go out of my way to subscribe to every company newsletter that sells my favourite products. You name it, whether its Beauty bay, Debenhams, Sephora (the list goes on), I'm signed up to receive anything they want to tease me with.
But I know I'm not the only one who gets lured into a trap of unnecessary spending. It's marketing and it works! They send you a product code and entice you with new products all in the same email... it would be a waste not to use 15% off right? Wrong!
This is probably the safest and simplest way to ensure you don't go overboard with your spending.
Having a budget for a spending spree will mean you have a set amount that you have to spend without being left with nothing for the essentials and the boring stuff like bills and food etc!
Question everything!
This may seem dramatic, but it's useful. Question every single purchase you consider - do you need it? Could you spend your money on something better if you waited?
I find that most of my spending comes from browsing the internet for stuff that I want to buy but don't need or that I even knew I wanted in the first place! Curse my need to impulse buy!
An easy way to stay away from this is to make a list.
When I'm browsing and see something I like, I add it to my 'to buy list'. This is a list sectioned into categories of what the product is, where I can by it and what the price is. It's quite a hefty list, currently consisting of over 30 items from only the past few days! I then wait until pay day comes around, decide what products I really want that still fit into my budget and THEN I can spend. It also helps to look back over the list, as I often decide that I don't want/need things as much as I thought. This has saved me so much money!
Samples - try before you buy!
Many shops now offer the chance to try a pricey product before you invest. You can either sign up to a sampling programme or simply go in store and ask to try something!
Many makeup counters now offer makeup demos or consultations to find your perfect shade. Shopping online can be tempting, but often going in store and asking for help to spend your money wisely can be more rewarding. Here's a handy post about shops and their samples!
Reviews
If you absolutely feel like you have to order something online with next day delivery because you want it so badly, I strongly advise you to google it first! Online reviews, hauls, demos and swatches can help you discover the good, the bad and the ugly. I cannot tell you how many times I have been saved from buying a palette or product that I simply would never use from just taking five minutes to watch a review.
Wait... did I just buy the same product?
So many palettes and pigments are almost identical nowadays, you're often shopping for the brand identity, packaging or the power of social media making you want things because everyone else has it...You don't need to spend £40 on a palette that you basically already have!
Kimberley Clark - Anti-hauls
Last, but certainly not least, my secret weapon! Kimberley clark is a YouTuber who makes videos specifically about the more commercially tempting products that you probably don't need and why you don't need them.
With the permission from the queen herself, I've included one of the first videos I ever watched that actually helped avoid buying something I don't need!
She is actually a lifesaver and is a joy to watch, definitely check her out. (Click here!)
Check for coupons!
If you do decide to take the leap and spend, make sure you check for deals to save a few extra penny's, at least you'll avoid the guilt a tiny bit, right?
Free postage? AKA spend more!
Please don't be lured in by the 'spend $100 get free postage' trick... buy what you need and save the extra for sale season!
If you have any other suggestions on how to avoid spending sprees or offer traps, please let me know in the comments! I'm always looking for ways to avoid my overdraft (the makeup addiction is real, I just cant stop!).
